At age 12, my friend’s older sister taught me to crochet. I love making baby blankets and have been making them for everyone I know ever since. I also enjoy making scarves and have sold quite a few over the years. I find crochet very relaxing. There have been studies done that show the repetitive motion actually helps to lower blood pressure.
As a result of my avid crochet obsession, I learned about Project Linus in 2000, an organization that donates handmade blankets to ill and traumatized children. I became the Coordinator of the Pittsburgh Chapter later in 2000 through 2002, making blankets, coordinating all the volunteers and delivering approximately 500 blankets each month to facilities in the Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. I loved being able to help others through a hobby of mine.
In 2002, I was invited to my first Scrapbooking Party. I was instantly hooked. A few years later, I worked at a local craft store as a Craft Coordinator and was also responsible for implementing their classroom schedule. Additionally, I taught their Scrapbooking Classes and held crops.
While I still crochet occasionally, when I need to make a baby blanket, Scrapbooking has become my new obsession. I probably have enough supplies to open my own scrapbook store, as do most others involved in this hobby.
I attend Scrapbooking Getaway Weekends with friends frequently and have many projects in the works at any given time. I will never get caught up.
Additionally, I have found a way to use my Scrapbooking hobby to help others. I create scrapbooks to be given to the Wish Kids through Make A Wish Greater PA and WV to place their pictures in after they have received their Wish. Disney World remains the most popular wish overall.
If anyone is interested in learning more about how you can help either of these organizations through your hobbies and talents, I’d be happy to discuss this further with you.
