Sitting down to write this post for Day #5 and trying to get my head around why I am doing this challenge and what I hope to accomplish going forward.
I had a great idea back in May to create a blog, two blogs actually. The first one was for Hobbies with Heart, which I set up as an LLC a couple years ago, to create a website or blog. I had great ideas of what I wanted my website to look like and the message I was looking to send out to my followers. It was to be a place for people to learn how they could creatively use their hobbies and talents to make a difference in this world.
As I discussed in an earlier blog post “My Crafting Obsession”, I have used my hobbies of scrapbooking and crochet to creatively make a difference by making Scrapbooks for Make-A-Wish and blankets for Project Linus. I am only one person and able to do just so much. But if I were to inspire others to do the same, we could exponentially make a huge difference.
I believe I tried to make my website too complicated. I was working with someone for over a year to create a database type website, where people could chose their hobby or interest and then find an organization from a dropdown box, that was a match for them to help with their hobby or talent. This would have required constant updates and monitoring and I was in way over my head. Therefore, I decided to just create a Facebook page, a simple blog, and Twitter account.
I created all of the above, however, the Blog/website hasn’t gone live yet and I haven’t updated the Facebook page in ages. I do check the Twitter account daily when I check my Pittsburgh Grammy account and do tweet occasionally.
Being overwhelmed by wanting to move forward, not knowing how and not having the time, resulted in me doing nothing.
Around that time I read an article about blogging that said you need to find your niche, become the expert and own it.
That is when I decided to become Pittsburgh Grammy. These were 2 subjects that I know quite well and can talk about for days. I did some research and while there are tons of Mommy Bloggers, there are not very many Grandmothers who blog, or blog very consistently. Being born and raised in Pittsburgh, I know how loyal and proud Pittsburghers are and felt there was a need to have a Grammy’s perspective on all things in the town of Black and Gold.
I have been keeping notes and handwritten rough outlines of blogs to write. I just needed the time and motivation to begin.
When I saw the email about this challenge, it seemed like perfect timing to get me writing on a more consistent basis. While I originally did not see myself writing a blog post each day, I was thinking that if I wrote one per week, that would work for me.
But as I am settling into this Challenge, I am hoping to create a habit of writing everyday. Being realistic, I am setting a goal to blog at least 2-3 times per week, as I know that once I build an audience, I need to keep them engaged. Perhaps I will try to roll out my original blog for Hobbies with Heart and make it a goal to write 1-2 posts for it and Pittsburgh Grammy every week.
Thank you Bradley Will for creating this challenge and giving me the incentive to quit procrastinating and move forward with my blogs
